The Ox
Patient as the turning year
The animal on this page is not the one from your birth year. That one comes from the year branch; this one comes from the branch of the day you were born — the day branch, as a reading calls it. Everything below is about that seat.
You and I are the ones still here. Everybody who set off with us has found something more interesting to do by now.
The Ox in Korean Saju
You finish things. Where other people need momentum, you need only a direction, and you will still be walking in it long after the enthusiasm has gone. The cost is that you will carry a load well past the point where you should have put it down.

As your day branch
The Ox is a day branch of endurance and buried strength — slow to move, very hard to stop.
What this animal is like in a chart
The Ox holds the last month of winter, when the ground is still frozen and the work is preparation nobody will ever see. A day branch here is read as endurance of the most literal kind: the capacity to continue without applause, weather, or evidence that spring is coming. Charts with a strong Ox favour long projects, land, and any craft where the tenth year matters more than the first.
It carries far more than it says. Its Earth conceals Water and Metal — feeling and resolve buried under composure — which is exactly what the classical reading describes. The named cost is release: an Ox day lets go of loads late, including the ones that stopped being theirs to carry.
With the other animals
Bound to — The Rat
The Ox and the Rat make one of the six harmonies (六合) — the closest tie two branches can hold. Day charts pairing them are read as binding: easy to fall into, hard to leave.
Struck against — The Goat
The Goat sits directly opposite the Ox on the cycle — the classical clash (沖). Not incompatibility: a pairing that will not let either side stay where it was.
Allied with — The Snake & The Rooster
With the Snake and the Rooster, the Ox completes a three-harmony triad (三合) that pulls toward Metal — three branches that convert best as a team.
Most people have never been told theirs. It takes a birth date, and a minute.
