The Rat

First across the river

The animal on this page is not the one from your birth year. That one comes from the year branch; this one comes from the branch of the day you were born — the day branch, as a reading calls it. Everything below is about that seat.

You and I have the same habit. We find the exits first, and we never mention that we did.
The Rat, counting
The Rat in Korean Saju

You read a room before you enter it, and you have usually worked out the exits. Resourceful, quick to adapt, and better than most at turning very little into enough. The cost is that you rarely let anyone see you improvising.

What this animal is like in a chart

A Rat day branch is read as somebody who moves before the situation has settled. The Rat opens the cycle at midnight, the hour when one day has died and the next has not yet declared itself. That threshold is the quality: the ability to operate before conditions are known, to accumulate quietly while everyone else waits for daylight. In a chart it favours beginnings, negotiation, and any work where information moves faster than permission.

The weakness that comes with the talent is concealment. The same instinct that finds the exit also hides the map, and a Rat day is prone to winning manoeuvres nobody was allowed to watch. The classical texts read its Water as intelligence in motion; the cost they name is trust, which pools slowly and drains fast.

With the other animals
  • Bound toThe Ox

The Rat and the Ox make one of the six harmonies (六合) — the closest tie two branches can hold. Day charts pairing them are read as binding: easy to fall into, hard to leave.

  • Struck againstThe Horse

The Horse sits directly opposite the Rat on the cycle — the classical clash (沖). Not incompatibility: a pairing that will not let either side stay where it was.

  • Allied withThe Monkey & The Dragon

With the Monkey and the Dragon, the Rat completes a three-harmony triad (三合) that pulls toward Water — three branches that convert best as a team.

Most people have never been told theirs. It takes a birth date, and a minute.
