The Snake
Knows before it is told
The animal on this page is not the one from your birth year. That one comes from the year branch; this one comes from the branch of the day you were born — the day branch, as a reading calls it. Everything below is about that seat.
You and I keep more than we let on. The question is whether either of us still remembers choosing to.
The Snake in Korean Saju
You understand situations faster than you explain them, and you are comfortable letting people arrive at conclusions you reached some time ago. Private, precise, and hard to hurry. The cost is that withholding becomes a habit rather than a choice.

As your day branch
The Snake is a day branch of insight and reserve — heat held under a still surface.
What this animal is like in a chart
The Snake opens summer with heat that has not yet announced itself — Fire in its yin form, held under a still surface. A Snake day branch is read as penetrating intelligence: the capacity to understand a situation completely before saying anything about it. It favours research, strategy, medicine, and every discipline where the decisive move is invisible.
Withholding becomes a habit. Its branch conceals Metal and Earth inside the Fire — judgement and patience fused to insight — which is why the texts treat it as formidable rather than merely clever. The cost they name is isolation by habit: a Snake day withholds so well that eventually nobody asks, and the silence it chose becomes a silence it is merely used to.
With the other animals
Bound to — The Monkey
The Snake and the Monkey make one of the six harmonies (六合) — the closest tie two branches can hold. Day charts pairing them are read as binding: easy to fall into, hard to leave.
Struck against — The Pig
The Pig sits directly opposite the Snake on the cycle — the classical clash (沖). Not incompatibility: a pairing that will not let either side stay where it was.
Allied with — The Rooster & The Ox
With the Rooster and the Ox, the Snake completes a three-harmony triad (三合) that pulls toward Metal — three branches that convert best as a team.
Most people have never been told theirs. It takes a birth date, and a minute.
