The Goat
Finds the sweet grass on the cliff
The animal on this page is not the one from your birth year. That one comes from the year branch; this one comes from the branch of the day you were born — the day branch, as a reading calls it. Everything below is about that seat.
You and I read a room before anyone in it has spoken. Nobody asked us to and we do it anyway.

You notice what is missing — the wrong note, the unhappy person, the detail nobody else registered. Gentle in manner, stubborn in substance, and more resilient than you are given credit for. The cost is that you take on other people’s weather as though it were your own.

As your day branch
The Goat is a day branch of sensitivity and craft — it finds footing where the ground looks impossible.
What this animal is like in a chart
The Goat holds late summer, when the year’s heat thickens into harvest. A Goat day branch is read as sustenance: the ability to find footing and provision where others see nothing, and to make a group feel fed — literally and otherwise. It is a storehouse branch for Wood, keeping spring’s growth in reserve long after spring is gone.
It absorbs whatever is around it. Its Earth conceals Fire and Wood, warmth and memory folded under a mild surface, and the tradition reads it as the most quietly loaded of the four storehouses. The cost is absorption: a Goat day takes in the weather of everyone around it, and cannot always tell afterwards which feelings were originally its own.
With the other animals
Bound to — The Horse
The Goat and the Horse make one of the six harmonies (六合) — the closest tie two branches can hold. Day charts pairing them are read as binding: easy to fall into, hard to leave.
Struck against — The Ox
The Ox sits directly opposite the Goat on the cycle — the classical clash (沖). Not incompatibility: a pairing that will not let either side stay where it was.
Allied with — The Pig & The Rabbit
With the Pig and the Rabbit, the Goat completes a three-harmony triad (三合) that pulls toward Wood — three branches that convert best as a team.
Most people have never been told theirs. It takes a birth date, and a minute.
