The Monkey

Solves it sideways

The animal on this page is not the one from your birth year. That one comes from the year branch; this one comes from the branch of the day you were born — the day branch, as a reading calls it. Everything below is about that seat.

You and I take the window rather than the door. Half the pleasure is that nobody expects it of us.
The Monkey, delighted
The Monkey in Korean Saju

You solve things sideways. Given a locked door you will check the window, and you are genuinely delighted when the obvious answer turns out to be wrong. Inventive, funny, quick. The cost is that you get bored before you get finished.

As your day branch

The Monkey is a day branch of cleverness and manoeuvre — metal that has learned to bend.

What this animal is like in a chart

The Monkey opens autumn — Metal arriving with momentum still in it. A Monkey day branch is read as applied cleverness: mechanism, improvisation, the sideways solution. It is the engineer’s pillar, strongest where rules exist to be understood thoroughly and then routed around.

It does not see things through. Its Metal hides Water and Earth, intellect running downhill into technique, and the texts rate it among the most capable branches in the cycle. The cost they attach is completion. The Monkey’s attention is a resource everything competes for, and a Monkey day will abandon a working solution for an interesting problem without noticing the trade.

With the other animals
  • Bound toThe Snake

The Monkey and the Snake make one of the six harmonies (六合) — the closest tie two branches can hold. Day charts pairing them are read as binding: easy to fall into, hard to leave.

  • Struck againstThe Tiger

The Tiger sits directly opposite the Monkey on the cycle — the classical clash (沖). Not incompatibility: a pairing that will not let either side stay where it was.

  • Allied withThe Rat & The Dragon

With the Rat and the Dragon, the Monkey completes a three-harmony triad (三合) that pulls toward Water — three branches that convert best as a team.

Most people have never been told theirs. It takes a birth date, and a minute.
