The Dog
Loyal past the point of comfort
The animal on this page is not the one from your birth year. That one comes from the year branch; this one comes from the branch of the day you were born — the day branch, as a reading calls it. Everything below is about that seat.
You and I stay. That is the whole of it — we stay, and it costs more than people think.
The Dog in Korean Saju
Your loyalty is not conditional, which is a rarer thing than it sounds and occasionally a costly one. You have a working sense of fairness and you will spend yourself defending it. The cost is that you stay in your post long after the post has stopped deserving you.

As your day branch
The Dog is a day branch of loyalty and principle — the guard at the close of the year.
What this animal is like in a chart
The Dog holds late autumn, the gate of the year closing. A Dog day branch is read as guardianship: loyalty as a working principle rather than a feeling, and a sense of fairness that will spend itself on other people’s behalf. It is the pillar of institutions, causes, and long friendships — a storehouse holding Fire, warmth kept banked against the coming winter.
It cannot leave a post. The banked Fire is the point: a Dog day runs warmer than it looks, and its hidden Metal gives the warmth an edge of judgement. The named cost is the post itself. Dogs stay — past the point of return, past the point of deserving — and the texts treat knowing when a watch has ended as this branch’s hardest lesson.
With the other animals
Bound to — The Rabbit
The Dog and the Rabbit make one of the six harmonies (六合) — the closest tie two branches can hold. Day charts pairing them are read as binding: easy to fall into, hard to leave.
Struck against — The Dragon
The Dragon sits directly opposite the Dog on the cycle — the classical clash (沖). Not incompatibility: a pairing that will not let either side stay where it was.
Allied with — The Tiger & The Horse
With the Tiger and the Horse, the Dog completes a three-harmony triad (三合) that pulls toward Fire — three branches that convert best as a team.
Most people have never been told theirs. It takes a birth date, and a minute.
